Chicago Bears Week 14 Winner No. 3: Jaylon Johnson

The Chicago Bears have their lockdown cornerback of the future in Jaylon Johnson. He is not quite there yet in terms of shutting down half of a field, but by next season he could be in that conversation. He played some great coverage on Davonte Adams yesterday and showed some real discipline that you do not always see from a second-year cornerback.

While he is not the fastest or most athletic, he is technically sound and is always using his smarts and awareness to put himself in a good position to break up a pass.

Johnson was getting some real attention early in the year due to his many pass breakups, but as the year went on it feels like people forget to mention him among the up-and-coming players in this league. Considering the guy has outplayed most of the first-round cornerbacks from his draft class, I think he deserves a bit more credit than he is getting.

It would be great if he could come away with more interceptions going forward, as he only has one in his career. Still, he has been a pass breakup machine and has given the Bears someone to build around going forward.

There was a lot of pressure on Johnson going into this year. After the release of Kyle Fuller, he knew he would be the CB1 on the depth chart meaning he would be guarding the best receiver every week. I would say he has lived up to that and more as he has been playing very well all year. The consistency from him this year has been a silver lining to say the least. He has also stayed healthy so far, which was a big worry after all of his injuries before the NFL and his rookie year.

Johnson played a great game against the Packers and was not the reason the Bears let up 45 points. There is really nobody else that can consistently provide relief on the other boundary on this team, and the Bears will have to address that going forward.

Next. How can Jaylon Johnson become elite?. dark

Jaylon Johnson has kept up his great play from his rookie year and has continued to step up as the Bears’ top pass defender. If he can get some help from the other defensive backs he might look even better and possibly come away with more interceptions going forward.
