Why Byron Leftwich should be the next Bears Head Coach

Using this profile I have also identified Bruce Arians, as the head coach the Bears should have hired instead of Marc Trestman. Here is something to further prove the value of this championship profile. Since the Bears chose Trestman over Arians in 2013, Arians has gone on to win a Super Bowl in 2021. In addition in 2018 using this profile, I identified Frank Reich over Matt Nagy as the Bears’ top head coach option.

This gets us to the present-day Bears’ search for a new head coach. There are two head coaching candidates in this market who fit the ideal championship profile. They are Byron Leftwich and Doug Pederson. Even though Pederson was the head coach of the Super Bowl-winning Eagles I would choose Byron Leftwich over him as my first choice. There is a key reason to choose Leftwich over Pederson.

The reason is Pederson runs a West Coast Offense (WCO). The Chicago Bears need to stay away from the WCO.  The Bears have had many WCO teams and none of these offenses were particularly good. Even the WCO offense led by Ron Turner that got the Bears to the Super Bowl was a bland offense. With Ron Turner’s WCO the Chicago Bears only scored 11 rushing touchdowns and 11 passing touchdowns in 2005. This resulted in the Bears averaging 17 points a game.

In contrast to the failed West Coast Offenses of the Bears’ past, Leftwich would run a classical vertical attacking offense that stretches out a defense. The reason to choose Leftwich’s vertical offense over Pederson’s WCO includes a hidden component to choosing a head coach. It takes not only smarts but lots of courage to successfully run this offense. In order to ensure the Bears’ next head coach leads them to a Super Bowl victory, he needs to have some Richard the Lionheart type of courage.
