The Chicago Bears are set to interview Champ Kelly, who is currently with the organization. We predicted it would happen, but it does appear as though Kelly will be the only executive in the organization to interview for the job. Considering most fans are annoyed with where the organization is, would Kelly be enough of a change?

Champ Kelly is actually one of the few candidates with GM experience in his past. Ok, it was for the indoor football league in 2007, but either way, he was the GM.

His role as a GM helped him get his first NFL job in 2007 when he was hired as a scout for the Denver Broncos. Kelly eventually moved to Assistant coordinator of pro and college scouting, and then became the Assistant Director of pro personnel with the Broncos.

During his time in Denver, he worked with John Fox, and when Fox moved to Chicago in 2015, Kelly took the ride with him. Kelly was the Director of pro scouting and eventually was promoted to Assistant director of player personnel.

Arguably the biggest point in the favor of Kelly is that Fox brought him, but Ryan Pace liked him so much that he kept him and promoted him. There seemed to be few things that Pace and Fox agreed on at the very end, but Champ Kelly was one of them.

On one hand, Champ Kelly makes plenty of sense. He is familiar with the organization and how things work. The transition would be much faster, and if he got the right coach, it could be a situation where the team hits the ground running.

On the other end, it is best for the Bears to completely clean house at this point of where the franchise is. They have dead money and lack draft capital, which shows it is time for someone new across the board.

The best part of the Chicago Bears’ past regime was that they drafted well, but Kelly worked on the pro side. He did a great job and will be valuable in many front offices, but he may not be the right fit for the Chicago Bears GM job.
