Chicago Bears: Round 5, Pick No. 148

This particular mock draft has only two defensive players being selected by the Bears, and Zakoby McClain is number two. The future Bears general manager needs to be able to find solid talent on Day 3, similar to how Pace did in his tenure.

The selection of McClain is also crucial in terms of the Bears linebacker core. Roquan Smith is set to receive an extension, but he alone can’t do all the work. The team is likely to cut veteran Danny Trevathan for cap space needs and for the fact that Trevathan has struggled to produce. Joel Iyiegbuniwe, Alec Ogletree, and Christian Jones are all set to hit free agency as well. That leaves Smith with 2021 undrafted rookie Caleb Johnson.

McClain is a bit undersized for his position, but he makes up for it in his playmaking abilities. Many scouts have noted how he can thrive in open space. His speed sideline to sideline during his time at Auburn was impressive, but scouting reports are concerned with his strength and inconsistent tackling. At worst, McClain can be a key special teams contributor who can provide the Bears some needed youth at linebacker depth.
