Loss that Hurts No. 3: Week 8, San Francisco 49ers @ Chicago Bears

If I can sum this game up, it would be this: Deebo Samuel equals explosive plays.

Every time it seemed like the Bears were doing something, the 49ers would bust off an explosive play for 10-plus yards. I can only imagine that’s deflating for a defense.

And for once, the Bears’ offense wasn’t completely stagnant. This was one of the more consistent offensive games for the Bears all season. Some speculated that it was because Matt Nagy wasn’t on the headset, but I have no clue if that’s true or not. Considering all that’s been revealed as of late on Nagy, I’m sure it played a part in the offensive success.

However, back to the point on what the game was: painful.

Yes, that word comes back again; this game was painful. Similarly to the Baltimore Ravens game, this game’s pain happened with time running out to end a half, but this time, it was the first half.

Heading into the second half, the Chicago Bears led 13-9, and although the Bears had a lead, momentum seemed to favor San Francisco. That’s thanks to the 3rd and 20 conversion where Deebo Samuel didn’t stop after the necessary 20 yards, rather he continued for a total of 50 yards. Without that play, the Bears have a likely 13-6 lead going into the half.

However, that 50-yard completion wouldn’t be the biggest play the Chicago Bears gave up this game.

With roughly half the third quarter still remaining and the 49ers with their backs to the wall, trailing 16-9, the San Francisco offense lines up for a 3rd and 20.

Then, this happened.

Thankfully, at least at the time, this play was deemed not a touchdown. However, that didn’t last long. Jimmy Garropolo ended up running it in himself for a two-yard touchdown to take most of the air out of the Bears’ sails.

That was until … “The Play” where Justin Fields made magic happen on the field.

Unfortunately, that euphoria didn’t last very long.

The 49ers made three more explosive plays on their next drive, and three minutes later, the 49ers found themselves with a 30-22 lead.

San Francisco was just too explosive for the Chicago Bears this game, and the lack of star power in the secondary was exposed.

With three painful losses and one to go, which loss hurt the absolute most this season for the Chicago Bears? I think most have an idea where I’m going with this.
