Washington makes plenty of sense because it combines desperation with the potential for a bridge. They have to do something, and they have to do it before the draft, even if they do draft someone.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is going to be gone, and they cannot just walk into the draft with Taylor Heinecke and expect to land the quarterback of their choice. Adding Andy Dalton gives them a legitimate fallback plan.

With Dalton in the mix, they can maneuver and try to land a veteran or draft pick at quarterback. At the same time if they fail they can at least look back and say that they are not just relying on Taylor Heinecke to be their only option.

Not many teams look at Dalton as this major upgrade, but Washington has to look at their situation and say that it could be worse than to bring him in and add some depth and experience to the room.
