Names to keep an eye on as the next Chicago Bears offensive coordinator
Mike Groh could be the OC that Matt Eberflus and the Chicago Bears need
First up is Mike Groh. Groh not only has a direct connection to Matt Eberflus, but he also has a direct connection to the Chicago Bears. Groh was a wide receivers coach in Chicago from 2013 to 2015. He was hired by Marc Trestman but stuck around for one season under John Fox as well. He was well-regarded while here but moved on to be the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach for the Los Angeles Rams. Unfortunately, this was under Jeff Fisher and not Sean McVay.
After the Rams finished dead last in points and finished the year with a 4-12 record, Jeff Fisher was relieved of his head coaching position. This was an unfortunate surprise for Groh as he went to Philadelphia to be the Eagles wide receivers coach. If you don’t recall, 2017 was when the Eagles won the Super Bowl and Mike Groh earned himself a ring. He was promoted to offensive coordinator for the 2018 and 2019 seasons after Frank Reich left to be the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.
This also means that Groh went full circle in working with Alshon Jeffrey who was a receiver here in Chicago while Groh was the wide receivers coach and both met up again while in Philly. While offensive coordinator, the Eagles finished seventh in passing and averaged 267 yards per game. Wentz played in 11 games and threw for 3,074 yards, 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Combined with Foles who started the other five games, the two combined for 4,487 passing yards. Could Justin Fields be the first Bears quarterback to surpass 4,000 passing yards?
Gorh’s 2019 season was just as productive. Wentz threw for 4,039 yards, 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The team went 9-7 and won the NFC East. The problem here is how much of this had to do with Doug Pederson or Mike Groh since Pederson called plays throughout most of his career in Philadelphia. When Pederson was fired, Groh was brought on by Frank Reich in Indianapolis as a wide receivers coach once again. His connection to Matt Eberflus could mean he has a shot to become a true play-calling offensive coordinator here in Chicago.
