Kevin O’Connell would make for a very interesting offensive coordinator

A name that would definitely be in my top three if I were ranking these coaches would be Kevin O’Connell. O’Connell comes from Sean McVay coaching tree who has been heavily influenced by Kyle Shanahan. O’Connell is currently the Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator. He’s been in that position for the last two years and was the Washington OC back in 2019.

The problem for O’Connell is that he doesn’t get recognized as much because Sean McVay calls the plays in Los Angeles. He has seen a few sniffs at head coaching interviews, but as of now doesn’t seem to be a front runner anywhere. It could have something to do with the fact that when he was calling plays for Washington in 2019, the team finished 31st in yards and 32nd in points.

I’m not going to look at that and think, wow, O’Connell is falling far from the Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay tree. Instead, I’m going to look at it as he has been learning from McVay over the last two years and can bring a slightly different perspective to things as he also has worked under Jay Gruden, Chip Kelly and Mike Pettine. If O’Connell wants to prove he is worthy of a head coaching gig, taking on the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator role for a couple of years would help.
