Why Dave Borgonzi is perfect fit with Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears have not made it official yet, but all reports are that Matt Eberflus will bring Dave Borgonzi with him to be the team’s linebackers coach. Borgonzi was the Indianapolis Colts linebackers coach and was hired by the team once Eberflus was hired.
It is clear that Eberlus and Borgonzi have a strong relationship and the Colts respected that, letting Borgonzi leave for a job that was not a promotion. Beyond coaching in Indianapolis together the duo was with the Dallas Cowboys together from 2011-13.
They worked together in the linebacker’s room, and it should be exciting that the last stops of Borgonzi and Eberflus equaled Sean Lee and Darius Leonard dominating.
What makes Borgonzi a fit goes beyond two stops and many years with Matt Eberflus, though. Dave Borgonzi has a brother named Matt, who has been with the Kansas City Chiefs since 2009. He is currently their assistant GM.
Considering Ryan Poles comes from Kansas City and has been there as long as Borgonzi, Poles, and Dave have obviously crossed paths as well. Poles has to feel comfortable hiring the brother of someone he has worked very close to for years.
Lastly, we have ties to the Chicago Bears franchise. Bears fans still love Lovie Smith, and when they get Eberflus and Borgonzi, they get pieces of the Smith defense.
After Borgonzi was with Dallas, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers called him up to coach with the team from 2014-17. That was the Lovie Smith era in Tampa Bay. It did not work out well, but once again you saw Borgonzi work with a stud in Lavonte David.
Overall, you see that Borgonzi has strong ties to Lovie Smith, and is committed to bringing that defense back to Chicago. Beyond that, he obviously knows Ryan Poles very well and was clearly a hire that Matt Eberflus pushed for himself. It is no surprise that he is the first name on board.
