The Chicago Bears have announced that Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy will be the offensive coordinator under the new Matt Eberflus regime. We do not know how Getsy will do, and he has only called plays at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and Mississippi State.
While Getsy will be calling NFL plays for the first time, you have to respect the process behind the hire. When Matt Eberflus was hired, many fans were disappointed that they did not get a young name who is up and coming and on the offensive side of the ball. Fears came of how much Eberflus will mettle in the offense.
Early signs are very few issues will take place. Getsy is a hot commodity, so it is hard to believe that he would come to a situation where he thought that the coach would impact his play calling. In fact, he chose Chicago over Green Bay because he knew that Matt LeFleur would call plays.
In Chicago, Eberflus is going to hand over the offense to the 37-year old, and that is going to be his to make his own.
Getsy was a hot commodity because both Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams spoke highly of him. Mike McCarthy brought in Getsy due to a connection from them both growing up in an area of Pittsburgh.
When McCarthy left, Getsy went to Mississippi State, but Adams and Rodgers urged LeFleur to bring Getsy back. This, combined with the fact that he interviewed for the Broncos head coaching job, and turned down the Packers offensive coordinator job speaks to how he is viewed around the NFL.
The reality is that Eberflus and Getsy hardly have a connection, unlike the staff that Eberflus Is building on defense. This shows that Eberflus hired a guy he thinks is the best, even if they have different backgrounds.
That is what Dan Quinn did with Kyle Shanahan, and what Mike Vrabel did with Matt LeFleur. Fans are worried that he may get hired to be a head coach if he does well, but if he does well, fans will be too happy with the success of Fields to care. The fact is that if you are a defensive coordinator the best thing you can do is hire a young offensive coordinator who can connect with the quarterback and install an offense centered around him.
The next thing for Eberflus to do is get out of the way and let Getsy do his thing. Who Getsy and Eberflus bring in as assistants should tell you what direction this will go.
