The Chicago Bears seem to have changed up their hiring strategy just enough

Here’s the thing, it is okay to be hopeful that the Chicago Bears changed up their hiring strategy just enough. Bringing in Ryan Poles despite not having a true connection to Bill Polian was a great move in my opinion. I might be a little biased as I ended up having Ryan Poles at the top of my GM rankings after Ed Dodds pulled out, but clearly, they saw the same things I did and I wasn’t even able to be a part of Poles’ interviews.

Seeing Poles have the authority to create his own structure is a nice change of pace too. Hiring Ian Cunningham as an assistant general manager was a great move and adds another impressive mind to their group of executives.

Now, I am still somewhat skeptical that Ryan Poles was given the ability to expand his head coaching search, but he made a pretty clear statement on the matter in his introductory press conference. He told the media that he had the ability to expand the search but didn’t need to because he found his guy in Matt Eberflus.

I love that Matt Eberflus is taking that CEO approach to the team. If the team hires Joe Brady to be the quarterbacks coach, that would make things even better. Pairing Luke Getsy and Joe Brady together seems like a great way to build an offense for the most important component — Justin Fields. Hearing Eberflus say he wants his staff to build around the players’ strengths should be a breath of fresh air to all Chicago Bears fans.

The defense is going to shift to a base 4-3, but that doesn’t matter much anymore as most teams run out of the nickel around 70 percent of the time. I heard enough out of Matt Eberflus to know that he doesn’t like players who loaf around and he sounds like a great teacher who is disciplined. It will be interesting to see who buys in and who doesn’t to Eberflus’ tough, “hit em hard” approach.

I think it is fair for Chicago Bears fans to have concerns though, while also still being hopeful. Ryan Poles, Matt Eberflus and even the new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy are all in first-time roles. Poles has never been a GM, Eberflus has never been an HC and Getsy has never been an NFL OC or called plays. This is a very risky approach, and that’s just another reason why many are wondering why Jim Harbaugh wasn’t at least given an interview.
