Chicago Bears Blue-Chip Player: Roquan Smith, ILB

Currently, the most talented player on the Chicago Bears roster is Roquan Smith. Any other player mentioned just does not deserve credit when comparing him to Smith. Over the last two seasons, Smith has been an elite-level talent and deserving of being honored as a First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowler. Despite not getting either recognition, Smith should see a big contract extension from Ryan Poles before 2023.

Over his first four seasons, Roquan Smith has yet to finish the year with less than 100 combined tackles. He has five interceptions, including a touchdown that he scored against the Bengals this year — helping the Bears beat the Super Bowl team. This season, Roquan Smith had 163 combined tackles (95 solos) — that is good for fifth in the NFL. He has also averaged 3.5 sacks per year over the last four years.

What stood out to me the most here is his tackles for loss. Last year, Smith finished with 18, and this year he had 12. When you look at the guys who had more in this category, no one comes close to Roquan Smith’s total tackle numbers. The combination of skills he brings to the table is insane and I don’t think anyone would argue that he is a blue-chip player. Maybe with Matt Eberflus and Alan Williams’ new defensive scheme, Smith will be able to get even more national recognition.
