The Chicago Bears should target Brandon Scherff in free agency
By far and away, the best available free agent guard on the market this year will be longtime Washington Redskins anchor Brandon Scherff. The 7-year veteran has made five Pro Bowls and been named an All-Pro once over his impressive career.
But, he’s not done yet. At 30 years old, Scherff is in line for one more chunk-sized contract. If the Bears wanted to go all-in on protecting Justin Fields, Scherff would be one heck of a signing.
In 11 games played last year, Scherff did not allow a single sack. He did miss weeks 5-9 and Week 15, but other than the injury woes, Scherff was phenomenal in 2021.
Speaking of injury woes, that’s truly the only negative when it comes to Scherff. He’s stout in both the run and pass aspects, but he has not played a full season since 2016. He has missed six, five, three, eight, and two games respectively, over the past five seasons.
For that reason, maybe the Bears could get him a little cheaper than he would come if injuries weren’t a question mark. Should Scherff stay healthy, he’d be the best guard the Bears have had in a very, very long time — probably since the early years of Kyle Long, in fact.
