Free Agent Matt Eberflus Could Bring to the Chicago Bears: Xavier Rhodes, CB

The Chicago Bears will need to add help to the defensive back group. Jaylon Johnson is a lock on the outside, but watching Kindle Vildor starting opposite of him was rough. The team went through names like Xavier Crawford, Duke Shelley and Artie Burns rotate through the lineup as well.

The only player who I believe showed upside and promise was rookie Thomas Graham. Graham deserves an opportunity to compete for a starting role. As much as I like Graham, yes, compete is the word that I used. Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus cannot just count on Graham being able to step up. They need to bring in some true competition whether through the draft or free agency.

A connection to Matt Eberflus is Xavier Rhodes. Rhodes has been playing for the Indianapolis Colts under Eberflus’ direction for the last two years. During his time working with Eberflus, Rhodes had two solid years. He allowed a 51.9% completion percentage and only an 84.5 QB rating when targeted in 2019. Those numbers increased to a respectable 60.7% completion percentage and 97.0 QB rating.

The downside here is over those two years he only had three interceptions. He also is going to be 32 years old before the season starts. Should the Bears pursue Rhodes, he might be the perfect option though on a short, not too expensive contract.
