The Chicago Bears could trade running back David Montgomery to Buffalo

Let’s get this out of the way, first: Trading David Montgomery should not be in the Bears’ future plans. However, this has been a topic of discussion amongst the social media pundits out there and needs to be addressed.

Trying to build a case for trading Montgomery typically revolves around the potential ascension of Khalil Herbert as the team’s starting running back. If Herbert continues to develop and plays similar to how he did last year, he’d be a fine starter for Chicago. However, in getting rid of Montgomery, the Bears immediately have a lack of depth.

If the Bears were to trade David Montgomery, they should be asking for no less than a fourth-round pick (and even that would feel insulting). Let’s say Chicago has to trade Montgomery, hypothetically. Then, a second or third rounder makes sense, value-wise.

From there, though, the Bears now have to go out and find a backup running back not named Tarik Cohen, and that likely ends up being another draft pick spent. The only consolation might be if the Bears used the pick from trading Montgomery to find a starter at cornerback or offensive line.
