10 free agents connected to new Chicago Bears leadership
By Ryan Heckman
The Chicago Bears could pursue free agent tight end Robert Tonyan
Last year, the Packers were hurt big time when tight end Robert Tonyan tore his ACL in Week 8. The 27-year-old was coming off an enormous season in 2020 which saw him catch 11 touchdowns — most by a tight end that year.
This past season was a pivotal one for Tonyan, who needed another strong year to ensure he maximized his money in free agency this spring. Unfortunately, Tonyan’s career numbers (84 receptions, 967 yards and 15 touchdowns) may not be enough to land him a big deal.
That could work out well for the Bears, who need another tight end to pair with Cole Kmet. Speaking of Kmet, this coming year is a make-or-break year for the former second-round pick. Having Tonyan would only further push Kmet to make something of his draft status, or else he’ll lose his job.
As one of the more lethal red zone threats at the position, Tonyan would give Fields another weapon inside the 20. Tonyan is 6-foot-5 and much more athletic than anyone would have thought before he broke out in 2020.
Don’t be surprised if Tonyan ends up in Chicago, because Getsy really likes him.
