Round 5, Pick 148: The Chicago Bears select Chattanooga offensive lineman Cole Strange

Sticking with offense for the fourth pick in five attempts, Poles again goes offensive line. This time, it’s sixth-year guard Cole Strange out of Chattanooga. Because he plays for a much smaller program and will be 24 years old in July, Strange will drop in the draft quite a bit.

However, he’s a heck of a find in this round. Strange has experience at both guard and tackle, but fits best on the interior at the pro level. He has elite movement skills. Strange can get up to the second level with ease, and also pull in a hurry if needed.

One of the best traits you can look for in an offensive lineman is his grip strength, and there is no doubt about Strange’s paws. The guy will latch on, and he isn’t letting go.

At the NFL level, Strange will have to work on not getting too upright in his stance, allowing the quicker rushers to take the lower angle and get by. If he can master his footwork in pass sets and get a bit lower, Strange has the potential to be a starter in this league. To begin with, he would be quite the asset to have as a depth piece.
