Free Agent Ryan Poles Could Bring to the Chicago Bears: Jarran Reed, DT

Finally, the last possible free agent I wanted to mention who could be linked to Ryan Poles is Jarran Reed. I know, some of you probably wanted to see Tyrann Mathieu on this list, but I just don’t see the Chicago Bears splurging that much on a safety when the offense needs more of a talent infusion than the defense.

The connection to the Chiefs for Reed is not that strong. I’m not sure if Ryan Poles and Reed really crossed paths too much while in Kansas City, but one would think they had at least a little interaction. Reed was formerly with the Seahawks before last season. He is a former second-round draft pick and 29 years old.

Reed lined up in both the nose tackle position and the 3-technique spot while with the Seahawks. He played next to defensive standout Chris Jones in Kansas City. He could be a replacement on the defensive line should the team decide to cut Eddie Goldman. He is coming off of a one-year, $5 million dollar deal with incentives built in to earn up to $7 million. I wouldn’t look to bring him in for any more than that if I was Ryan Poles.

Over his career, he had one season that he stood out with 10.5 sacks (2018). Taking that year out of his average since it was an outlier, Reed has averaged 2.5 sacks per season. He has also averaged two tackles for loss in each year. He is solid versus the run, but I’m not sold on him adding much value to the defensive line. In fact, I think I’d prefer the team re-sign Bilal Nichols or look elsewhere.
