Hi, my Chicago Bears brother and sister fans. This article started as my thoughts on the press conference, but due to timing, I was unable to get this out to you the day of the press conference. No worries. Let’s talk more about the offense with this defensive coach and maybe some nuggets on defense.

Let’s start with defense. The Chicago Bears will run a 4-3 base defense with a lot of zone coverage. Matt Eberflus confirmed that during the press conference, he talked about how the Chicago Bears organization has switched from 4-3 to 3-4 and now back to 4-3. As some might know, most defensive teams are in a nickel or dime package more, so the base defense isn’t seen much during a game anywho.

What should Chicago Bears fans expect from Matt Eberflus and Ryan Poles?

The biggest defensive takeaway from the press conference was that Matt Eberflus would not call plays. I have been pounding the table that Matt Nagy struggles between being a head coach and a play-caller. The head coach does not need to call plays. Suppose they can do both, that’s great. Multi-tasking calling plays and being a head coach is an entirely different skill set. I couldn’t stand how Nagy didn’t see a fight by Javon Wims or a missed route by Anthony Miller because he was too busy looking at the next play.

How can any coach make his team better if he isn’t watching the game? Alright, a lot of that deals with the offense, so let’s get into the offense. Fast, physical, and explosive players are something that Ryan Poles specifically brought up that he is looking for in the draft. Ryan Poles brought up how he looked for coaches before he even had the chance to become a GM. I brought up in other articles that as a general manager candidate, these GMs should have had a list of coaches they wanted and liked and given them to the search committee.
