When free agency begins in three weeks, the Chicago Bears will undoubtedly be active. Although new general manager Ryan Poles seemed like he’s not one to make a big splash in that area of the offseason, there is still reason to believe he’ll be good for one or two.

One of the areas the Bears could make a splash is at cornerback. There are some good ones available this year, and it’s a position of great need for Poles and Chicago.

Hiring a defensive-minded head coach like Matt Eberflus is one of the biggest reasons why the Bears very well could spend big on cornerback this offseason. Not to mention, they hired a former secondary coach, Alan Williams, to be their defensive coordinator.

That side of the ball will still be a major focus, even though everyone’s attention is still primarily on Justin Fields and the offense.

During NFL free agency, the Chicago Bears should choose to spend big on a starting cornerback

Poles, a former offensive lineman, should be able to find himself a lineman or two in the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft. He’s stated he’s always been about acquiring more draft capital, too, so don’t count out the possibility of Poles doing so, just to be able to add more linemen upfront.

Free agency is where the Bears should focus on a proven commodity at cornerback. Offensive linemen can be found in the draft if Poles and his team are doing their job well. Then there’s wide receiver — also a position we could see the Bears target in both free agency and the draft.

But, cornerback is maybe the single position Chicago should prioritize in free agency. This is a position where you know, beyond any reasonable doubt, that a player is worth spending on. Cornerback is one of the hardest positions to play, being that most of them are alone in their job on many snaps.

These following cornerbacks are well-worth spending money on, and Poles should ensure one of them ends up in a Bears uniform by the end of March.
