It is no secret that the Chicago Bears will need to put some focus on their wide receiver group this offseason. Outside of Darnell Mooney, there isn’t a single receiver under contract who should start for any NFL team in 2022. Dazz Newsome was a rookie last year and barely saw the field. Some of that is on Matt Nagy and the staff, but either way, I’m not counting on Newsome to be anything more than a WR4/5 in 2022.

The good news for the Chicago Bears and Ryan Poles is that there looks to be a solid group of free agent wide receivers in free agency this offseason. Now, obviously, some of these guys may sign extensions with their teams, or maybe the team franchise tags them, but at least a handful should become available.

The Chicago Bears may need to trade for a WR if the free agent market shifts

Davante Adams is not going to be an option in my opinion if he truly wants $30 million per year. Especially since he is going to be 30 years old before the 2022 season ends. There are rumors that the Packers may try to franchise tag him, but wow, that team has some salary cap issues to work out. You thought Ryan Pace left things in bad shape for Ryan Poles? I would not want to be Brian Gutekunst right now.

The next name and the one wide receiver I’d be willing to spend bigger money on this offseason if I were running the Chicago Bears is Chris Godwin. Godwin is dealing with an ACL injury but has the potential to be ready to start Week 1. It appears unless Godwin suffers any setbacks, Week 3 would be the latest a team should expect to see Godwin suit up. His talent and age alone make this signing a priority for me if I am Ryan Poles.

Some of the other big names potentially hitting the open market at wide receiver includes Mike Williams, Michael Gallup, DJ Chark, Christian Kirk, Odell Beckham, Jr., and JuJu Smith Schuster. There are even guys like T.Y. Hilton, Sammy Watkins, A.J. Green and of course, the team could potentially bring back Allen Robinson (not happening in my opinion). There are some solid options as you can see, but what if guys start signing elsewhere? It’s possible the team should consider trading for this underrated wide receiver instead.
