The Chicago Bears select running back, James Cook – Georgia

This was one of those best player available picks. The Chicago Bears running back group is not a problem. In fact, I think they have one of the better groups in the NFL with David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert. The problem is that the running back position is not something any team should spend big money on any longer. With David Montgomery likely to hit free agency after the final season of his rookie contract this year, the team needs future insurance.

This is where James Cook steps in. Fantasy owners who like Cook as a prospect would hate this landing spot. That said, I’d love it as a Chicago Bears fan. Watching Montgomery walk in 2023, James Cook and Khalil Herbert can battle it out for the most carries in the 2023 offense.

Cook could be drafted as early as the third round, but again, running backs just are not as valued as highly as they once were. Many solid running backs come out of the fifth round and landing Cook here would be a great value.

He is the younger brother of Minnesota Vikings running back, Dalvin Cook, but he is not projected to be as dynamic despite some similarities in their running style. Cook should be a change-of-pace back early in his career due to his excellent receiving ability but has the talent to take over the primary role in any zone running scheme.
