1. Focus had been on defensive backs

As noted, only two years of a long career, over 20 years, In the NFL were Alan Williams being a defensive coordinator. The rest were mainly working with defensive backs. What is interesting to note is that Alan Williams played running back at William & Mary.

He was also the running backs coach at W&M, but from 1998-2000 moved to defensive backs. As noted, in 2001 he moved to Tampa Bay and was working under Mike Tomlin when Tomlin was defensive backs coach.

Then, from 2002-2011 he was the defensive backs coach of the Indianapolis Colts. From 2014 through 2017 he was the defensive backs coach with the Lions and of course, most recently was with back with the Colts.

Some names that he specifically worked with are Antoine Bethea, Bob Sanders, Darius Slay, Glover Quinn, and Julian Blackmon. All of them developed mostly with Williams, and Slay turned into an All-Pro under his guidance.

This has to be good news for Jaylon Johnson, and it will be interesting to see what other names he adds into the mix. Williams has to be excited to already have Khalil Mack and Robert Quinn in place, knowing that he has to focus on fixing the secondary.
