2. Marcus Cannon
Marcus Cannon was with the New England Patriots from 2011 through 2019. He was technically on the Patriots in 2020 but sat out the season with COVID concerns. Then, in 2021, the Houston Texans traded for Cannon. With the Patriots having front office members throughout the Texans organization the move made sense.
However, Cannon only played four games before a herniated disk ended his season early. The Texans can move on from Cannon and save $5M.
The way to look at Cannon is a player who could start at right tackle, but in the long run, is an upgrade over Germain Ifedi. The team paid Ifedi a similar salary in 2021 to what it would likely cost to bring Cannon into Chicago in 2022.
Cannon is 33 and has injury questions. His best play has not come on the field since 2019. Still, if he can give a season of starting right tackle, it would be a great win for the Bears. On the flip side, if he is a veteran who provides a safety blanket in the form of depth, at least he upgrades from Ifedi, who was in that role last year.
