1. The Chicago Bears could sign some special teams asset from the 49ers

Considering the only time he has been a special teams coordinator has been with the 49ers, he may be trying to bring in some names that he is familiar with. Of course, the other positions coaches and the front office will have stronger say, but if Hightower pledges that they will make the 53-man because of special teams, then his statement will be taken into consideration.

Richie James and Travis Benjamin each worked as return men under Richard Hightower.  Trent Sherfield has been a special teamer throughout his time with Hightower as well.

On defense, Dontae Johnson and Marcell Harris kept their jobs with the 49ers because they added special teams’ value. Marcell Harris in particular could be signed by the team as he is a hybrid safety or linebacker. Either spot the team has a need in, and beyond that, his strongest role has been special teams.

You could easily see Harris coming at a similar salary to someone such as Deon Bush and having a similar role. There are going to be special teams assets that make the team solely for that reason. Every team needs three or four core members of each unit, and we saw in the playoffs how valuable having guys like that is. With that in mind, you should take some of these names seriously.
