Chicago Bears Prospect 4: Phidarian Mathis, DL – Alabama

There isn’t a school that consistently churns out high-level NFL players like Alabama. With that said, Phidarian Mathis has a lot more to his game than the jersey he wears. Mathis is great at the point of attack due to his hand fighting and length and generated an impressive 9.5 sacks from the interior in 2021.

The main knock on Mathis is athletic ability. He isn’t necessarily a bad athlete, but he doesn’t have the athletic profile to have the same type of upside as his peers. Also, Mathis spent five seasons at Alabama, so he will be on the older end of prospects.

Mathis isn’t going to go super early in the draft, but that could work to the Bears’ advantage. He. was a very productive college player who was just overshadowed by the others on that side of the ball, which is going to happen when you play for Nick Saban.

Mathis played in the a and b-gaps in college and put up numbers against the run and pass. Getting a pro-ready prospect at a position of need would be good for the Bears, even if he doesn’t have off-the-grid potential.
