10 Takeaways from the Chicago Bears Khalil Mack trade
Chicago Bears Takeaway No. 5: What will they do with the extra second-rounder?
The second-round draft pick acquired from the Khalil Mack trade means the Chicago Bears can now more easily add to their team, not only one but possibly two of the many flavors of talented wide receivers available in this draft. I like getting the tall wideouts with speed from this draft over getting them through free agency because many of the speedy free agent wideouts have injury concerns.
For example, as tempting as DJ Chark, with his 6’3″ frame and 4.34 speed, is to sign, he also has a long history of injuries. Safer draft additions include the local boy, Alec Pierce who grew up in Glen Ellyn, IL. He has good hands to go along with his 4.41 speed and 6’3″ and 208-pound body. There are other very good wideouts who could fall to the Bears at the 39th pick in the draft. Another appealing option is Christian Watson at 6’5″ and 207 lbs with 4.36 speed.
If the Chicago Bears want to draft a cornerback, defensive lineman or offensive lineman with the 48th pick received from the Mack trade, here is a great wide receiver option for the 71st pick. That guy is Justyn Ross. At 6’4″ he is an excellent red zone target. This is enhanced by his great leaping ability to go along with some real sticky fingers. An added bonus with him is his elite run after catch ability. He should be available in the third round or possibly, later because his Clemson team had a bad excuse for a quarterback.
Clemson draws the top high school wideouts to its program and Justyn Ross was one of them. Drafting a luxury that is a hidden gem like Ross in the third round, is now possible because the Bears can more easily use their newfound spending money from the Mack trade on free agents they need to fill out their roster.
