This is the time of year that everyone has to be careful — especially on social media. I have been using that mute button more often on Twitter as of late as fake accounts throw out so many rumors. I had to do a double-take on the recent news that was put on the bird app tonight (Twitter). It is being reported that the Chicago Bears are interested in Tyrann Mathieu.
The report is coming from Evan Massey who is not the biggest of NFL names, but he is also not some troll on Twitter. Massey is reporting that the Colts and the Chicago Bears are “darkhorse” contenders to sign star free agent safety Tyrann Mathieu.
The #Colts and #Bears are two dark-horse contenders to sign star free agent safety Tyrann Mathieu, per source. I’ve previously reported on Chicago. Plenty of other teams involved, but these two are interested.

Are the Chicago Bears really interested in Tyrann Mathieu?
Take the rumor what you will, but even hearing that the Chicago Bears might be interested in bringing in Tyrann Mathieu is interesting. Mathieu has played as both free safety and strong safety and probably would do just fine with Eddie Jackson, but we might see a similar outcome to what took place when Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was lined up next to Jackson.
Worrying about that shouldn’t be too much of a concern. Remember, the Chicago Bears will also be converting their defense into more of a Cover-2 scheme that we saw back when Lovie Smith was the head coach. This is the type of scheme that Matt Eberflus and Alan Williams will be installing, but he’s thrown his own tweaks and uses other coverages as well. Don’t just think the team will be in Cover-2 all game, because that’s going to be the furthest thing from the truth.
The problem here is why would Ryan Poles look to bring in Tyrann Mathieu on what would be a big-money deal when he just sent Khalil Mack to the Chargers? Pairing Mathieu with Eddie Jackson would also make them one of the most costly safety duos in the league. That seems a little farfetched to me. I’m not hating on Massey’s information, he’s just putting out what he heard from a source, but things just do not add up to me on this one.
The other thing that would be strange is a move like this would be another big signing for the defense. Alright, Larry Ogunjobi isn’t the biggest of defensive tackle signings, but he is also now going to be the 10th highest-paid DT in the NFL. Ryan Poles and Ian Cunningham are supposed to be making a financial shift to the offense, not following the Ryan Pace offseason playbook. Out of three free agent signings, only one has been on offense thus far.

This recently released center must be on Chicago Bears radar
This recently released center must be on the Chicago Bears' radar. The Chicago Bears have some fans worried about their lack of inactivity in free agency.
A move like this would be a shock. Don’t get me wrong, Tyrann Mathieu is a star in the NFL, but although the rumor is out there, don’t expect it to happen even though Poles and Mathieu might have a Kansas City connection. In fact, it’s not the best sign when reports are even the Chiefs didn’t offer Mathieu a contract.
