The argument in favor of the Chicago Bears signing Tyrann Mathieu

For starters, Tyrann Mathieu is easily one of the top safeties in the entire league. Any time the top safeties in the NFL are brought up, Mathieu’s name is often in the top few names of that list.

The Honey Badger is a three-time All-Pro and three-time Pro-Bowler, so it’s easy to say that teams are lucky to have Tyrann Mathieu. The Chicago Bears would be no different here.

The combination between Eddie Jackson and Tyrann Mathieu could be in contention for the best safety pairing in the NFL. Biased take? Possibly, but it’s hard to argue that when these two players are playing at their best, it’s hard to beat.

A 2018 Eddie Jackson playing alongside a 2019 and/or 2020 Tyrann Mathieu could be enough to take the Chicago Bears to a Super Bowl on its own. Before people take that the wrong way, no that’s not actually a take. However, for those that enjoy watching defensive football, it’d be quite the sight to see pairing prime BoJack with prime Honey Badger.

Now, obviously, they both can’t snap their fingers and make them in their prime again, but — if this signing actually happens — an entire offseason under Eberflus’ HITS principle could help rejuvenate them a bit. For a guy that could’ve lost focus a little in Eddie Jackson, the HITS principle could be a good thing to bring him back to the “BoJack” fans loved.

As for what else Tyrann Mathieu adds brings to the table, he’s become a veteran locker room guy with experience in very good locker rooms. One of which was the 2019-20 Kansas City Chiefs locker room; not that the Chiefs’ locker room isn’t great now, but it was very special that 2019-20 season.

Being able to bring a guy from that team, similar to how the Chicago Bears landed Ryan Poles, is something all teams should — and probably do — want.

For the reasons that Tyrann Mathieu is a top safety, he’s seen a Super Bowl-winning culture, and he’s connected to general manager Ryan Poles, the Chicago Bears should welcome Tyrann Mathieu with open arms.

However, it’s not all upside with Tyrann Mathieu. While the complaints are shorter than the compliments, the complaints are still there.
