5 things to know about Chicago Bears new signing Byron Pringle
3. Byron Pringle gets open underneath
Considering the first two notes on Byron Pringle, this one should make just as much sense. Pringle is better in the slot, and he is better against zone, and with that in mind, he is better at getting open for the short underneath passes.
Last season 56.8% of his targets came 10 yards within the line of scrimmage or even behind it. The season before that he had 73.1% of his targets at 10 yards or shorter. This is with Patrick Mahomes as his quarterback, and not a check-down artist, so you know that this is where Pringle is going to live.
When you are good against zone coverage, it makes sense that the best thing you can do is find a soft spot in the coverage and sit in it. That is exactly what Pringle does and how he creates most of his offense.
Considering it comes from the slot, he probably gets off coverage in the zone which allows for quick hitters to be caught over the middle of the field. 49.8% of his targets were in the short middle of the field.
Stylistically, this makes plenty of sense. If there is one area where Darnell Mooney is not as strong, it is the middle of the field. He is great at getting open down the field and by beating man coverage on the outside. Pringle being the short pass-catcher who is better in zone coverage is the perfect pairing of skill sets. The good news is that these two should never be clogging each other in this offense.
