A 2022 Chicago Bears mock draft with trades to assist free agency
By Ryan Heckman
With their last pick in the draft, the Bears go back to the defensive side of the ball and find what could be a gem at safety. Baylor’s JT Woods has a lot of the raw traits you love to see in a defensive back.
Woods stands 6-foot-2, weighing in around 195 pounds. He ran a blazing 4.36 in his 40-yard dash, which alone is enough to get him drafted, paring with his size. His athletic ability is absolutely one of his best traits, as Woods’ vertical jump was measured at 39.5 inches at the Combine.
This is a player who could be molded into a future starter, for sure. He has the speed that Eberflus desires. That’s evidenced by Woods being a former track star.
He’ll probably fit best in the Bears’ scheme, too, because it allows him to play more of a zone. In man coverage, he can take some bad angles and the decisiveness isn’t always there. But, if he’s allowed a little more freedom, then Woods is your guy to eventually be groomed into a key piece.
Lastly, Woods isn’t afraid to lay the wood — kind of a “must” with a last name like that. In the sixth round, the Bears would feel great about ending their draft with this selection.
