This offseason was supposed to be all about surrounding second-year quarterback Justin Fields with talent so that he can develop into the franchise leader the Chicago Bears envisioned.

Or, was it?

First-year general manager Ryan Poles has taken an approach that, understandably, has confused some fans. Thus far in free agency, Poles and the Bears have yet to make a real splash.

The Bears have signed a couple of offensive linemen, but only one of them will be a starter come September, and that’s former Green Bay Packers center, Lucas Patrick. As for wide receiver, this team still has a ways to go.

There are many available wide receivers the Chicago Bears could still sign in free agency

Poles brought in former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Byron Pringle to be the Bears’ slot guy and likely No. 3 wide receiver. He also signed former Green Bay Packers wideout Equanimeous St. Brown to a one-year deal.

While neither of them is going to completely change the landscape of Fields’ development, they shine the light on something far more important than fans need to understand — a plan.

Yes, Poles has a plan, and we all need to be patient. He’s going to use the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft for his major moves to surround Fields. But, more significantly, the 2023 offseason is where the Bears will do a lot of work after Fields presumably takes a step.

Now, as for the remainder of this offseason, there are still a lot of wide receivers available. Five, in particular, could make sense for the Bears.
