The Chicago Bears could sign free agent wide receiver Tre’quan Smith

Another speedy receiver still available is former New Orleans Saints wideout Tre’quan Smith. For four years, Smith has been a third or fourth option with the Saints. Sometimes, he’s had to fill in as maybe the one or two, depending on injuries to guys like Michael Thomas.

Now a free agent, Smith is only 26 years old and a former third-round pick out of Central Florida. He would be another perfect stopgap at the position, and a guy who won’t necessarily get more than a one or two-year deal in free agency.

In four seasons with the Saints, Smith caught 112 passes for 1,486 yards and 17 touchdowns. He’s never been one to take over a game or present the defense with a notable threat, but the one thing he can do well is take a defender deep. He’s very fast and can be used occasionally as another deep threat next to Mooney.

If Poles wanted to sign Smith as maybe their fourth or fifth option, fans would be more than fine with that. He does have winning experience, having played with Drew Brees, and would be a nice veteran presence, even though he’s still relatively young.
