The Chicago Bears should reunite Justin Fields with Jeremy Ruckert, TE

While the Chicago Bears just have Cole Kmet on the checkbooks in terms of tight ends coming back next season— considering Jesper Horsted is listed as WR— it’s not unlikely that the Bears could spend a later-round pick to reunite Justin Fields with his former tight end, Jeremy Ruckert.

Now, Ruckert isn’t a guy that lights up off the draft board due to his stat sheet.

Jeremy Ruckert’s 2020 season stats

  • 13 receptions, 151 yards, five touchdowns

Does that mean he’s a bum? Not at all, but he’s not a Kyle Pitts. And that’s not a shot at Ruckert either, but he’s just not the TE1 of the draft class, is all.

However, considering there’s a pretty even divide between Bears fans on whether Cole Kmet is the answer or not, one thing is for certain and that’s Cole Kmet isn’t the all-time best blocking tight end of all time. What Kmet does well is usually involving the ball being thrown in the air.

On the flip side, Ruckert is an animal between the trenches. Even at a somewhat small 6’5″, 252-lbs frame, he’s a stout body that’s shown the ability to be a beneficial Y-tight end or U-tight end, depending on which is needed.

While Ruckert has shown the ability to blow up defensive ends on blocks, he’s also shown some pillowy soft hands that could also help Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears offense. Given their need at both of Ruckert’s strengths, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Bears reunite Ruckert with Justin Fields using a later-round pick if he’s still available.

All-in-all, it’d be great to get Justin Fields any of these guys, but as long as the Chicago Bears make strides this offseason, that’s all fans can really ask for. Their “rebuild” is more of a retooling, and once the tools come in, the NFC could be put on notice of the Chicago Bears as a team to look out for.
