The Chicago Bears could trade David Montgomery to the Houston Texans

The Houston Texans are in the midst of an even more serious rebuild than the Bears, and they could be looking for just a couple of young, veteran pieces to plug in and build around. Like the Bears, surrounding a second-year quarterback in Davis Mills should be the Texans’ priority — for now.

Houston very well could decide to draft another quarterback and this time at a much higher selection. However, Mills showed enough last year to give him at least 2022 to prove that he’s worth starting. One thing Mills didn’t have last year was a legitimate run game. Trading for Montgomery would give Houston just that.

The Texans re-signed 31-year-old running back Rex Burkhead this offseason, but he will likely be used in a more complementary role. The team also signed 5-year veteran Dare Ogunbowale, but he is more of a special teams guy and better served as a third-string back.

Should the Texans pick up Montgomery, they would have a much stronger looking depth chart at running back. Of course, then the Bears would need to spend a draft pick on a running back. However, they could look in the fifth or sixth round and get by just fine.

In this deal, the Bears come away with an early third-rounder, plus a fourth-rounder in exchange for Montgomery and a fifth-round pick.
