4. Chicago Bears need more linebackers

At the owners’ meetings, Matt Eberflus was asked about his depth at linebacker. For a former linebacker coach, the room is rather empty, and would currently be missing the third starter in the 4-3 base look. Eberflus noted that the look that they will show most is nickel, which means that Roquan Smith and Nicholas Morrow are slotted into start.

Still, they will play 4-3 at times, which means adding more names at linebacker. Joe Thomas and Caleb Johnson could certainly make the team, and as of right now, the two would be competing for that third linebacker spot.

Still, even 4-3 defensive teams will keep six linebackers in most 53-man roster constructions. Again, that means that they will want eight or more linebackers in camp. They have a few other camp bodies signed, but they will want to sign a couple of linebackers at some point.

This is another position where the need is there, but not pressing, mainly due to Smith. It means that a late-round pick or UDFA will be brought in, but also that not enough draft capital will be spent on the position that they will still have to sign somebody. The good news for the Chicago Bears is that linebacker has been a slow-moving position and they still have players with starting experience as well as depth options to sign before training camp.
