Round 3, Pick No. 71: The Chicago Bears select John Metchie III, WR – Alabama

Most of the time, NFL teams that draft players from Alabama are happy they did so.

Not often are those from the Crimson Tide, not all they were hyped up to be. And that’s especially true when talking about Alabama wide receivers.

  • Devonta Smith
  • Jaylen Waddle
  • Jerry Jeudy
  • Calvin Ridley
  • Amari Cooper
  • Julio Jones

And now with John Metchie III and Jameson Williams being in this year’s draft, there’s a possibility that two more elite receivers join the brotherhood of stud WRs in the NFL from Alabama.

Outside Darnell Mooney, the Chicago Bears need a YAC receiver. Allen Robinson was hardly a YAC guy, and with the other receivers on the roster being lower-level ceilings, John Metchie III would be an outstanding selection for the Chicago Bears.

Now, considering that he’s off a torn ACL, the likelihood of him dropping to Round 3 is possible. Without his injury, there’s serious doubt that he’d even drop out of the first round.

But Metchie’s putting in the work to ensure that the team who selects him is getting a steal.

Considering his torn ACL happened on December 4th, 2021, that gives him approximately eight months until the season starts in August to have recovered fully.

With the sports medicine around nowadays, there’s a true chance that he’s able to play the first week of the season at 100%.

Not every injury or recovery should be compared to Cam Akers, but to give that perspective, Akers returned from a torn Achilles in a little less than five months.

With the technology now, as well as the money backing these sport-medicine facilities, it’s not outlandish to think Metchie can return fully from his torn ACL in the 2021 SEC Championship against Georgia.

Now, with two receivers and a corner taken, how does hypothetical Ryan Poles played by Dakota Zientek attack the reminding picks of the draft?
