Chicago Bears Player Most Likely to Breakout in 2022: Khalil Herbert, RB

Filling in well for the injured David Montgomery last season, Khalil Herbert gained the love and respect of many Chicago Bears fans. Rushing the ball 103 times for 433 yards and two touchdowns in his rookie season, Herbert was a bright spot for Chicago. A sixth-round pick out of Virginia Tech in 2021, Herbert is another one of Ryan Pace’s infamous “Day 3 Draft Gems”.

Running a 4.46 at his VA Tech Pro Day, Herbert’s speed pairs him ideally with the Bears’ new outside zone run blocking scheme. Looking to utilize misdirection in the play action passing game, this type of juice at RB poses a serious threat to the defense. Boasting both Herbert and Montgomery out of the backfield, Getsy will have plenty of talent to work within the RB room.

As Chicago Bears fans continue their transition into the new regime, look for the offensive scheme to look more like Green Bay, and less like Kansas City. With limited talent in the WR room, look for the power running game to be a huge emphasis for the offense in 2022. While Montgomery is sure to be the lead back, expect Herbert to get plenty of carries too. Balancing out the workload will be good for both players, and both have proven they can handle starting duties.

Khalil Herbert is only scratching the surface as an NFL running back. Entering the new League year, you should expect big things from #24 out of the backfield.
