Chicago Bears 2022 NFL Draft Target: Calvin Austin, WR – Memphis

The last receiver the Chicago Bears drafted out of Memphis did not pan out, but Calvin Austin is another receiver to keep an eye on. He is only 5’7″ and 170 pounds but makes up for his lack of size in speed and explosiveness. The concern would be, how well he holds up as he takes hits from NFL talent versus the below mid-level talent he consistently faced at the collegiate level.

Unlike Pickens, Austin is a run after catch monster and is very explosive out of his breaks He creates tons of separation and opportunities for yards after the catch. With a 4.32 40-yard dash, Austin possesses elite speed and is a dangerous threat downfield.

Austin has a knack for getting open, despite being undersized. His lack of size is his biggest red flag, as getting jammed at the line will be a problem for him at the NFL level. He reminds me of Tyreek Hill with his frame, speed, and run after catch ability, and is another receiver the Bears should do their homework on. Will he live up to Tyreek Hill’s abilities and performances? Doubtful, but as a guy who could be had slightly later in the draft, he makes for a great target.
