Chicago Bears Free Agent Acquisition: Tavon Young, CB
A fourth-round pick out of Temple, Young has been a good slot cornerback for Baltimore since entering the league in 2016. Forced to watch Buster Skrine, Duke Shelley, and Marqui Christian throughout the past three seasons, Bears fans will be happy with newly acquired CB Tavon Young. Possessing much more experience than Shelley or Thomas Graham Jr, Young has started 24 games and appeared in 50 for the Ravens’ defense.
Heading into the season without any more proven help in the CB room would have been a very risky move by Poles. Depth pieces Kindle Vildor and Thomas Graham Jr provide Matt Eberflus with talented young corners who he can grow and develop. Despite their raw abilities, those two are still just prospects for the Bears’ defense.
With injuries so common and coverage so important in the modern-day NFL, you can never have too many good DBs. Costing the Bears only a one-year deal worth $1.75 million, Young was a cheap and reliable option for Chicago. Filling in another key position to Eberflus’ scheme, Poles provided “Flus” with a proven veteran player in the slot.
A clear upgrade from any slot CB currently inside Halas Hall, Young was a solid addition to the Bears’ defense. With so many needs at WR and OL, I am relieved to have a starting-caliber veteran CB added to the defense before the draft.
