Pick Analysis. WR. Tyquan Thornton. 148. player. 860. Scouting Report. Baylor

The Chicago Bears grab one offensive and one defensive player in the fifth round

First up, with the 148th-overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears select the fastest receiver at the NFL Combine. Tyquan Thornton ran a 4.28 40-yard dash at the Combine earlier this year. He isn’t small either as he stands 6’2″. He’s coming off of a breakout year where he caught 62 balls for 941 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Thornton would not be a starter, but I think that Luke Getsy could find some ways to use this quick receiver in some type of sub-package. His route tree will be very limited to deep, vertical passes that are thrown over the top of the safeties. He can also be used as a decoy to stretch the field and open up passing lanes across the middle. He doesn’t have twitchy hips that allow him to gain YAC in the short passing game. All of his YAC would be on deep balls that go to the house. He has above-average hands and would make for a fun toy for Justin Fields.

Clemson. 150. 879. CB. MarioGoodrich. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis

Two picks later, the Chicago Bears turn to Mario Goodrich out of Clemson. Goodrich has good size for an outside corner at 6’0″ and 180 pounds. Had Goodrich seen the field sooner at Clemson, he’d probably be selected on Day 2 rather than Day 3. He has the ability to fight receivers and move them off their routes. He’s an above-average tackler too, something that is important in a Matt Eberflus system. His downfall is his speed, but that can be accounted for within the Bears’ new defensive scheme.

He finished his three-year career at Clemson with five interceptions and his upside is tremendous. Snagging him here in the fifth round would bring great value to an already solid draft.
