Predicting the Chicago Bears starting secondary post 2022 NFL Draft
The Chicago Bears looked to the draft for a safety too
It was not enough for Ryan Poles and the Chicago Bears to bring in a starting-quality cornerback with their first pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. No, they also turned to their next pick in the second round (48th-overall) to select another starting-quality player in the secondary — this time a safety.
With the 48th-overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears selected Jaquan Brisker out of Penn State. Like Kyler Gordon, Brisker has the ability and talent to start in the secondary as a rookie. Brisker is more than just an in-the-box safety. Some might think he could be the next Adrian Amos, but in reality, he has the ability to be much more than Amos. Amos was never known to be a safety who has a knack for getting his hands on the football. Brisker has that ability.
As I already alluded to, I believe that Jaquan Brisker will be the starting strong safety across from Eddie Jackson who should finally be able to play the free safety spot without having to cover so much ground. His ability to play freely should hopefully help him return to his 2018 and 2019 form. Behind them will be DeAndre Houston-Carson and Dane Cruikshank. Personally, I thought they could handle themselves without the help of Brisker. I would have preferred George Pickens. That said, it is obvious that Brisker was the highest-rated player on Ryan Poles’ big board.
With the additions of Kyler Gordon and Jaquan Brisker, the secondary is not going to be a weakness any longer. This will be a young group that can grow together too. I am hopeful that Poles finds a way to build up the wide receiver group now through free agency or maybe even a trade. I just want to see Justin Fields given enough quality talent to take the next steps in his development.
