The Chicago Bears drafted Braxton Jones after trading down a few times on day three. Jones is a left tackle from Southern Utah. While most day three picks do not result in much, there is hope that in betting on a small school player with high upside that they are finding a legitimate gem.

Braxton Jones was not the most hidden gem, though, considering he was invited to the NFL combine. His performance there may have helped get him drafted, and show teams like the Chicago Bears that his movement skills can translate.

Even when you combined that Braxton Jones has great size, and athletic traits, there is still the factor of slipping into day three for a reason. Below are a few NFL comparisons for Braxton Jones from a height, weight, and athleticism perspective. These players were also selected on day three of the draft or later.

Isaiah Prince

Isaiah Prince was a sixth-round pick from Ohio State. You could say that Braxton Jones has more upside, because he showed NFL ability at Southern Utah, while Prince was a sixth-rounder from a big school showing he did not play like his athletic traits.

Still, the combination of long arms, and athletic movements are close. Prince started four games for the Bengals last season, and while their offensive line was the weak part of the roster, he helped them win the AFC.

Terence Steele

Terence Steeler may end up being a better outcome for Braxton Jones. Steele was forced into action in 2020 because of injuries and struggles. However, when he got a second chance in 2021 he played much better and is going to be looked at as a starter now that La’El Collins is gone.

This shows the reward Dallas gets from a huge hit, as Cincinnatti pays big money, and Dallas saves on their hit of Steele.

Caleb Benenoch

Benenoch was on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the first four years of his career where he started 22 games at both guard and tackle. He stepped into the New Orleans Saints last season and got a start at tackle. However, he is currently a free agent.

These examples show that teams such as Dallas, Tampa Bay, and Cincinnatti needed day three picks to fill in on the offensive line and all of them have made the playoffs in recent years. Even getting help in the way of someone like Steele or Benenoch would be a win for the pick from Ryan Poles and the Chicago Bears. This is how fans should look at his progression.
