The signing of Lucas Patrick is an underrated move by the Chicago Bears

When we look at the offense, there were two areas of concern for most Chicago Bears fans heading into the 2022 offseason — the wide receiver group and the offensive line. Luckily for us Bears fans, Ryan Poles and Ian Cunningham are both former offensive linemen and seem to know a thing or two about the position.

The wide receiver group is honestly underrated as we sit here today too. I’m not overly sold on the position and I would have attacked it slightly differently, but we will have to see how these guys perform within the new system.

The offensive line however has seen a drastic overhaul, but the most underrated move here is the signing of Lucas Patrick. Patrick is very familiar with Luke Getsy and the Green Bay offense. Although Getsy will not run the same exact same scheme, there will be plenty that carries over and Patrick will have a head start. This is important, especially for the center, who is supposed to be the anchor and communicator of the offensive line — something Sam Mustipher struggled with (along with blocking) last season.

Lucas Patrick doesn’t have a long resume (34 starts in five years), but what we have seen tells me he is an immediate upgrade over Mustipher. That alone is going to help this offensive line perform better in 2022. Signing a two-year deal is important too as it shows how dedicated the team is to use him this year in hopes he earns an even better contract for 2024 and beyond.
