Chicago Bears fans wanted to see more help at the WR position

This is a tough one. Do we value Allen Robinson based on only his 2021 performance, or do we value him as a wide receiver who has shown us greater production in his prior years? The other thing we need to consider here is how far does Robinson move the needle on his own? When we look at the depth at the position though, which roster had the more talent?

Let’s take a look at the two rosters and determine which group wins.

"2021: Allen Robinson – WR1 Darnell Mooney – WR2 Marquise Goodwin – WR3 Jakeem Grant – WR4 Damiere Byrd – WR5 Dazz Newsome – Practice Squad 2022: Darnell Mooney – WR1 Byron Pringle – WR2 Velus Jones – WR3 Dante Pettis – WR4/5 Tajae Sharpe – WR 4/5 Equanimeous St. Brown – WR5 David Moore – TBD Dazz Newsome – TBD"

I’d be crazy to say that the 2022 WR group is better than the 2021 group. Allen Robinson and Darnell Mooney are the clear choices over Darnell Mooney and Byron Pringle. The thing is, I do like the depth of the 2022 roster behind the WR1 and WR2 more. Byron Pringle is better than people give him credit for and is probably one of the best signings by Ryan Poles this offseason. Velus Jones is interesting and we shall see how that works out. That said, he doesn’t have a very high climb to outperform Marquise Goodwin and Damiere Byrd.

Positional Ranking: 2021 Wins (slightly)

Alright, I just couldn’t do it. The upside is there though for the 2022 group and therefore I do think it is closer than many think. Allen Robinson had a very down year last season, but he’s still a top 25 wide receiver in the NFL talent-wise. Byron Pringle and Velus Jones haven’t shown us anything yet. The 2022 roster has better depth and this is why we are even comparing the two units. Although the 2022 roster has more depth, the top-end talent of the 2021 roster puts it over the edge.
