The fifth-best fantasy football player of the Chicago Bears: The Bears D/ST

For anyone unfamiliar with the designations D/ST, it stands for the team’s defense and special teams. This allowed teams that scored touchdowns on punt and kick returns to be awarded six points as well. Like the kicker position though, many find the D/ST component to be too much of a pain to deal with and have also removed this position as fantasy leagues became more customizable as the years went on. Nevertheless, you could always count on the Chicago Bears defense and special teams — at least most years.

I used FFToday.com as my site for fantasy stat collection and here is how the Chicago Bears’ defense and special teams have done since 2001 (20 years):

"No. 1 Defense: 2 times Top-5 Finishes: 7 times Top-10 Finishes: 12 times"

The team’s two best seasons came in 2012 and 2018. In 2012, the Chicago Bears averaged 11.7 fantasy points per week. That was 1.6 points more than the second-best D/ST that season. In 2018, the team averaged 10 points per week and that was 1.4 points more than the second-best D/ST that season.

If the D/ST was more valuable in the realm of fantasy football, the Chicago Bears defense and special teams would rank much higher in this top-five ranking. A long history of great defensive players over the last 20 years plus a future Hall of Fame returner in Devin Hester are the main reasons why.
