Chicago Bears 2022 roster ranking: No. 64 C.J. Avery
With the slow countdown, until the Chicago Bears hit training camp, we are counting down the roster from 90 to 1. This list will be looking at which players could have the biggest impact on the 2022 roster.
We have made our way to number 64 overall.
Chicago Bears 2022 roster ranking: No. 64 C.J. Avery
C.J. Avery is a UDFA linebacker from Louisville. You do not typically see rookie UDFAs quite this high, but that can speak to where the Bears roster is. It also can speak to Avery and the fact that he should be a player who makes the practice squad if not finds a way to sneak onto the 53-man roster.
Avery went to Louisville to play safety and left his freshman season starting at linebacker. After that, he was a tackle leader for multiple years on the Cardinals’ defense. He did not attend the NFL combine but had a strong Pro Day.
In fact, you can see that he compared favorably to Jack Sanborn, a favorite UDFA signing by many.

The two both should realize that they are on the path to the practice squad, if not the roster with a strong summer.
Avery is young, he has adequate speed, and he has been productive since getting on the field. He is a bit of a tweener, but his size is becoming more prevalent at linebacker, not the other way around.
If he can beat out Jack Sanborn, or someone like Caleb Johnson that is all he will need to find his way onto the roster.
Beyond that, when it comes to C.J. Avery his path to a roster spot could be special teams. Whether he was playing linebacker or safety the two best things he was best at were running downhill and being able to make the tackle.
The Chicago Bears have a UDFA rookie here, but they could find him on the 53-man roster sooner than expected. That is why he is ranked all the way up to 64th overall.
