Chicago Bears 2022 roster ranking No. 44 Mike Pennel
The countdown of the Chicago Bears roster is on. We are going from 90 all the way to number one looking at which players could have the biggest impact on the 2022 season. We have made our way down to 44th overall.
Chicago Bears 2022 roster ranking No. 44 Mike Pennel
It is purely a coincidence that last year, on almost this exact day we had Mike Pennel ranked 44th overall. He is in the exact same spot, although a lot changed between last year and this year.
Last year, he was entering camp in this same exact spot, though. He was competing with Khyris Tonga to make the roster as a depth lineman and a nose tackle. Still, last year he went to training camp and got injured. He was let go with an injury settlement, ending the competition with an anticlimactic resolution.
It is surprising to see him right back in this spot, though. He caught on with the Atlanta Falcons and spent the 2021 season with them.
Then, through coaching changes, front-office changes, and plenty of free agency, Pennel signed back in Chicago to be on a different defense, but in a similar role.
It helps that Pennel was in Kansas City before he went to Chicago. So, Matt Nagy probably got word on Pennel from Andy Reid. Then, on the flip side, Ryan Poles knew Pennel because he was in the front office with the Chiefs.
That is what gets us right back in the same spot as last year when it comes to Mike Pennel. He may get cut again, but there was a good chance that he was going to beat out Tonga when he was a rookie. Now, the Bears’ front office did not draft Tonga, and they may again favor Pennel.
Still, Pennel is older, and may not have as much upside. It will be a competition worth watching this season.
