We are counting down the Chicago Bears roster as we count down the days until training camp. This ranking is looking at the most impactful players on the roster based on their 2022 impact.

We are inside the top 40 and down to number 37.

Chicago Bears 2022 roster ranking: No. 37 Trestan Ebner

Trestan Ebner is a running back from Baylor in his rookie season. He was a seventh-round pick. The obvious realization is that he is behind David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert. However, from there he could end up being the number three running back.

The big thing that Ebner has that Hebert does not have is his ability as a receiving back. Ebner was almost more of a flex player than a running back in college. His ability to do both allowed him to get the football in different ways, and it could be his path to the NFL as well.

Ebner could be considered the number three back, but he will have to compete with Darrynton Evans. Evans is a former third-round pick, he has a similar passing game upside, and he tested out to be much more athletic than Ebner. Even while Herbert was a sixth-round pick, he was a Ryan Pace pick. Evans is a Poles signing.

The issue with Evans is his injury status. He essentially has done nothing but recovers from injuries and get injured in his first two seasons. That is typically what would happen if a third-round pick is let go in just two seasons.

So, the Bears have a third-round pick with serious injury issues, competing with a seventh-round rookie for that third running back spot.

In most cases, the third running back will not be a big contributor when you consider Montgomery and Herbert have a presence. At the same time, the ability to add as a pass-catcher could be worthwhile as ending up higher than currently rated.
