Why haven’t the Chicago Bears signed Jaquan Brisker yet?
By Dakota Wayne
With rookies and quarterbacks set to begin their Training Camp, Jaquan Brisker and the Chicago Bears still have yet to agree on a contract, per Dan Wiederer.
Due to this, it’s not certain if or when Jaquan Brisker will show up for camp.
While the talks between the Bears and Brisker are allegedly “fluid,” what does this mean for the second-round pick out of Penn State?
What’s the holdup on Jaquan Brisker’s contract with the Chicago Bears?
Prior to any word on Brisker’s contract, the No. 48 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft was seemingly going to begin the season alongside Eddie Jackson in Week 1. Now, that Week 1 start is becoming less of a given.
If the contract can get agreed upon sooner rather than later, it’s still a strong likelihood that Brisker suits up in Week 1 as a starter, however, if not, Brisker’s starting spot seems less-than-likely.
The rumored root behind Brisker’s unsigned contract is based on guaranteed money in his third year.
So, while it’s not a major issue, it’s an issue nonetheless. An issue that, hypothetically, wouldn’t happen to a general manager with more experience. This is, on the surface, a slip-up by Ryan Poles.
Reason be it, head coach Matt Eberflus has been very vocal about how impressed he is with Jaquan Brisker.
"“He’s been really good, really good,” Eberflus said. “We’re just so thrilled with his talent, you know, with his mental makeup and just the person he is and where he is in his development so far up until this point. He’s right on pace there, so we’re excited for him. – Coach Matt Eberflus on rookie safety Jaquan Brisker following minicamp"
A nod like that from a head coach— and a defensive-minded head coach, nonetheless— is nothing to look lightly on. The Chicago Bears were hyped to get Jaquan Brisker on their team, and for good reason. Brisker was a stand-out as a Nittany Lion, and the Bears are hoping he can continue that level of production at the NFL level.
However, without putting pen to the paper on his rookie contract, it won’t matter how excited the Chicago Bears are about him; nothing matters until a contract is agreed upon.
The earlier the two parties can agree, the better this team can be.
